play sound?

is there a way I could play sound from terminal or such?

I've got a plugin for x-chat and it asks for "#your play cmd e.g. /usr/bin/play" which obviously doesn't work

I've tried with alsa, but I can't compile it for os x (says I need linux or sth)

so does anyone know is there a way I could play sounds with a shell command (prolly have to install something?) like type "play sound.wav" in terminal and it would play it

try sndplay, it's in fink. Haven't used it but it looks like what you're looking for.

hmm, I installed this, I run it, returns no error but I don't hear any sounds
