All:

I desperately need to be able to password protect a folder in OS X so that it prompts me for a password every time I try to access it. I don't want to compress the data, and would like to be able to save files to it from programs. I thought this would be simple enough, but I guess they completely missed the ball at Apple on this. Either that, or I did  Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'd create an encrypted disk image.

Applications folder... Utilities... Disk Utility.

Go to the menu bar and click on IMAGES. Highlight NEW and then select BLANK IMAGE. Assign a name, choose the size (how many megabytes or gigabytes), select AES-128 as the ENCRIPTION type, and the format is Read/Write. You'll be asked for the password to use whenever you attempt to mount the disk image you're about to create. Note that under the password fields there will be a checkbox that you should leave UNCHECKED (based on what you're trying to achieve). It says, "Remember password (add to keychain)."
