Please Help. I Need This Fixed.

Everytime I try to launch the application "Installer" it just closes. I see the dock get smaller to make room for the Installer icon but it just returns to normal like a split second later.

Without Installer I can't install any .pkg files and my Software Update started telling me that it can't update because of an error. I think it's because of Installer not working. I can't install iTunes 2.0.3 at all without Installer, or anything else involving .pkg files (which is almost all Apple uses for Mac OS X).

Can somebody tell me how to fix this or send me their copy?:(

Please help.:(

to my knowledge, you're the first person to ask this question and already have 10.1.1 installed. with everyone else i have addressed this problem with (in its various manifestations) the problem has been in not having installed updates in the proper order. but if this were the case, you shouldn't have been able to upgrade from 10.1 to 10.1.1. have you updated everything using software update or have you installed any of the recent updates from other downloads?

herve's always a little cryptic but he's got a good point here. have you tried running a disk repair utility? it's very important that it be the most up to date version otherwise it might screw things up more. you might just need to do the fsck thing to fix it. I am also assuming you have done all the standard first line of defense things like rebuild the desktop & zap the pram. A good defragmentation and optimization is always a good thing to try as well. but i am working under assumption you have tried all these since you are a mac guru. I also figure there is a reason you are not just doing a reformat and reinstall as so many people tend to suggest in this situation. It is possible to reinstall osx starting with your first version disk and doing each install afterwards til you get back to 10.1.1. Apple and others at this site reccomend against this but i have done it successfully. almost all your settings and prefs. will remain intact. probably a good idea to back up any real important data just to be safe. still as  as you are.

I'm not sure if what happened to you is the same as what I'm about to type but anyway...

When I first installed OSX and tried using Software Update the updates weren't updated in the correct order which basicly currupted the program, so I had to get out my OSX CD and re-install. That's how I fixed my problem, you don't need to do a clean install...just a regular install so you don't loose your files.

I tried running Disk Utility and it does the same thing as Installer.

I tried to reinstall but the disk says that I don't have a previous version of Mac OS X installed.

So I don't know.:(

This sounds like a job for fsck -y!

Restart your computer, holding down command and s at startup. Once it boots into ugly non-gui mode type:

fsck -y

let it run. Type that command again until it says that your disk appears OK.

I think there is a command-line package program similar to solaris's pkgadd.

Mine is located in:
/sw/bin/dpkg

I think it is there because of fink or something... not sure if it is standard.

BUT, if you have dpkg, I think the software updater downloads updates into /Library/Receipts
with that in mind, you may be able to manually install the updates, and that might fix your system.
