I've been having troubles with my HD for a few days now.

The problems started with Safari not wanting to boot up, taking its time. Then, after booting up, it would crash after loading a page. The problem's gotten worse, much worse. I can no longer edit/move/create any files on my HD. I tried to create a new account to see if the problem was just with my account, but I when I try to create a new account in System Preferences it doesn't do anything at all. I don't know what happened but it does seem like a virus to me. I tried using virus software but they didn't find anything... occasionally didn't run properly. I've tried using Disk Utility to scan and fix permissions... it came up with a ton of errors but wouldn't fix them no matter how many times I tried. It's really bothering me.

My question is: is there anyway I can get my computer back RIGHT NOW? I don't have my system disk with me (or anything similar) and I really would like to just clean out the HD and hopefully start fresh... is there a Terminal command I can use or something to clean out the HD and start all over?

Any help is appriciated. And any news on this issue would be appriciated as well. Thanks for your help.

Actually, it sounds like your HD is failing. I'd back everything up and get a new one asap.

All your symptoms you describe here and elsewhere smack of textbook drive failure.

it may not be that drastic. a good sign of a hard drive failing is it being particularly vocal, making whining/crunching/grating noises louder than it should. you haven't so far mentioned this.

could you give me a readout of the

a) size of the hard drive

b) free space of the hard drive

IBM-DJSA-210
Capacity: 9.37 GB
Available: 3.3 GB (even though the HD is clean of anything really... doesn't make sense.)
