Polling a network?

Vard

Looking for progress
Someone of a yahoo Mac group that I read posted a question that I have never seen, don't know what it means and was curious about what he was talking about.

He asked if Panther will "poll a network".
What does that mean? Just wondering since I have never heard of it.

Thanks,
Eddie

I'm not a real expert, so I'll give the simplified answer -- polling means a server sending out a request for other computers to identify themselves, so its list of computers on the net is current. In Windows Domain Controller networks, it includes authentication to keep out unauthorized users. Mac OS X is able to do the authentication -- maybe someone else will tell us if Panther adds polling versus "on access request" authentication.
