Powerbook 1400 Battery

Hi,
I have a Powerbook 1400 and I bought a battery for it. My Powerbook will not recognise the battery. The old battery was recognised in my Powerbook but didnt hold a charge. The person I bought it from said he tested it and he knows it works. Why wont it work?

a) Because the person you got it from lied.
b) Because the contacts on either the PowerBook or the battery are dirty.
