Powerbook G4 Boot Issues

Help!

I cannot get past the login screen. When I type my password, the screen goes blue, then returns to the main login window. Here is what I have tried so far:

Changed password using the master password
Login through Safemode (same issue persisted)
Single user mode: fcsk -fy (three times)
Disk Utility: Repair Permissions and Repair Disk
Cleared PRAM (I got no response holding cmd-ctrl-p-r and didn't chime, just started up normal)

I am not sure what is going on, but I have Leopard installed, and my boot disk is panther, so I knew that the disk utility prob wouldn't help. I think I want to try clearing startup items, but can't get there. Any help getting past the login screen would be amazing!

What happens if you boot up and log in with the SHIFT key held down?

Also, if you can boot into single-user mode, mount the hard drive, then set aside the /Library/Caches folder and the /Library/Fonts folder and the ~/Library/Caches folder and the ~/Library/Fonts folder and see what happens.

nothing really worked, though I tried all of the above again, and ended up just reinstalling the system. its running a bit slow now, but is operable. thanks for the advice!
