Powerbook G4 : need to change the internal cd burner

Hi,

Yes I know, the title is frightening.
My cd reader/burner died, and it decided to bring a Cd with itself to heaven. Mac technicians are too expensive and the purchase of a new part will already ruin me. Couple of months ago, I changed the hard disk of my computer, so I know how difficult it is to reach the internal components of the specific Mac model I own (Powerbook G4 12 " Superdrive).

Right before dying, my computer still could show in its "system information", that I currently have a “matshita dvd R uj 825”. Now I need to change this part, but two very important informations are missing:

1 - Which CD and DVD reader/burner can I buy that would be equal quality to the model I currently have? (I dont necessarely want additional options, just need Cd/DVD burner that will be functional and compatible!!)

2- Can anybody refer me to a web site that shows how to change the Cd reader (with pictures that would be marvellous!!!). I know that with the following website I can reach the cd reader, but then, I dont know which wire I will have to disconnect and/or if there is a delicate operation to carry out: http://www.powerbook-fr.com/powerboo...article53.html

Thank you!!
Kim

OWC has some good mac parts.

It's possible to take a CD out of a broken slot-loading drive. I've done it with a TiBook that ate my tiger install. Just take the slot loading drive out (instructions above), and with the right screwdriver, it's just a matter of 3 or 4 screws.

Thank you sssoooooooo much to both of you! :)
That website is just perfect. It's gonna be really usefull, and it conforts me to know I,m not the first one who DARES changing that specific piece!

Now I just need to buy a new Cd burner.
Would anyone know wich characteristics are really important to consider while shoping for a "matshita dvd R uj 825" replacement? I'm sure there are many... and to make sure I dont buy the wrong cd/dvd burner, can you tell me what I have to keep in mind. For exemple:

-Does it need to respect a specific interface?
-Must I know the dimensions of my current cd burner to make sure I get a similar one?
-anything else.....

Now that I hate Matshita, I'd like to know what would you consider to be a good brand for this kind of piece?
Otherwise of course, I can just go to a AppleStore and ask for a Powerbook G4 12" Cd burner, but I doubt they're gonna be the cheapest ones!

Thanks again for your help!

Kim

:)

Thanks I'll take a look at that website. In the meantime, could you tell me if "Panasonic UJ-845B" seems ok to you?
