Hi All,
Forgive me if there's already a thread on this, but I couldn't search for the terms "2x" and "4x" because they're under 3 characters. :-(
Anyhow, I just purchased some TDK 4x DVD-R disks, and I'm a bit confuddled (I made that word up specifically for the way I feel now) by Apple and TDK's website info on the compatibility issues. ( http://www.apple.com/hardware/superdrive/ and http://www.tdk.com/dvdinfo )
From what I gather, since my superdrive is NOT a Pioneer model, and since my PowerBook G4 is of the newer variety, then I don't need to update the firmware in order to use 4x media.
OK. But it says that using the 4x disks with a firmware-updated superdrive will actually cause the disks to be written at only 1x. So Apple recommends sticking with 2x media.
But is that recommendation only for the older macs and/or Pioneer drives? In other words, is my superdrive MEANT to handle 4x media at 4x speeds, or will I suffer the speed penalty?
If anyone knows, please advise. I could return the 4x media for 2x if need be, but I'd rather benefit from the 4x if possible. Thanks!
