Powerbook G4 won't accept OS X Login Info

I recently allowed my Powerbook G4 667 to run out of battery life while in standby mode. I guess it didn't like that. Now when I boot I get a login screen saying the name of the computer and the user is listed as "other." When I click on the user icon it takes me to a second dialog asking for username and password. I entered the only username and password I have ever put into OS X (I've never had to login before to boot, only to install programs/updates so I assume it's asking for that same info I put in for admin priv.). The box just shakes and clears, I guess not accepting my info. Please help! I got the machine back up using the OS 9.2 disk and changing the boot disk back to OS 9.2.
I also tried the boot from the OS X CD to "reset" the password and when I get to that point it says there are no users on my drive to reset the password for.
I would like to not have to reinstall OS X but will if I have to. I am just unframiliar, and fear screwing something up.
Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Robert
