Print driver installation

I am running a G3 powerbook under Panther. Every time I try & install a printer driver, the installation process quits, no matter which printer it's for.
I have reinstalled the system software to no avail. A clue may be in that sometimes at start-up, I get lines of script and a request to type 'mac-boot'.
Could it be a firmware issue?

many thanks

'Could it be a firmware issue?' - sure, anything is possible; however, it is less likely to be the cause of a driver installation process failure.

'A clue may be ... I get lines of script and a request to type 'mac-boot'.' - resolve this problem, before anything else.
Boot from the 'Panther Install Disc 1' (please do not post that you do not have a copy ... - you need, and should always have available, the installation discs), open (launch, run) 'Disk Utility' via the 'Installer' menu item. Select the 'First Aid' tab, and click on the 'Repair Disk' button (wait until completed, and repeat) and then the 'Repair Disk Permissions' button (wait until completed, and repeat). Reboot (restart) the Mac - any 'command line's now? If not, turn OFF the Mac, wait (a minute or so), turn ON the Mac. Any 'command line's now? If not, use the Mac for some time, then - turn OFF the Mac, wait (a minute or so), turn ON the Mac.

If all appears well - now, attempt to install the unknown model printer's unknown version printer driver. Nor provided, was the version of 'Panther' installed.

Report back your results, explicitly.
