Print on XP Network using Native HP Drivers

Hi guys,

New question here. I have a 12" PB (Panther) on a wireless network with an XP box. I have a HP 970Cse on LPT1 on the XP box for printing. Here is my problem:

I obviously would like to print from the mac to the XP box, and I have installed the network printer as a "windows printing" printer. Only problem is it defaults to the "CUPS + Gimp Print" driver, which is fine, BUT, I use the duplex feature of the printer often (two sided print). The HP Driver includes a two sided print option in the pull down menu, but the Gimp Print driver does not.

I would like to use, instead, the native HP driver. When I install the printer locally, through USB, it is IDed automatically. But when I choose "windows printing" I cannot locate the HP driver anywhere. Any ideas?

Also, is there any way to force the print driver to ignore the cartridge ink out warning. In XP, it warns you, but continues to print anyway.

Thanks,
Rich

Did you select the HP Deskjet 900 series, CUPS+Gimp-Print v4.2.5 driver or are you using the generic post script, CUPS+Gimp-Print driver? http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3 The 970 series is listed as operational not fuly operational and the DJ970c is listed further down the DJ970cse is not. My experience is that the only way to print to windows printers from a mac is with the use of the CUPS drivers. Try asking someone at sourceforge if they can help you out with your duplex printing option. See if they can make it fully operational.
I've never found a way to turn off the ink warning other than not using hp's crappy software. I buy the printer and throw the disk away.

Hi Speed,
Thanks for the reply. I actually tried using the the gimp 4.2.5 and the 4.2.6 drivers, as well as the HPIJS/Foomatic drivers for OS X. The Gimp-print drivers don't support duplex printing yet. The HPIJS drivers have the duplex feature, but you have to also download the Ghostscript postscript interpreter. I'm using them right now, and they seem to work pretty well.

I was hoping to us HPs native mac driver, because it also has some native utilities, but I needs to use CUPS, I guess I will. Nice thing about CUPS is that ignores all of HPs annoying features. Thanks !
Best,
Rich

I have the same issue with my Canon S900... the Mac uses the OS X native drivers when it's pluged in localy, but on the network I can only make use of the CUPS Canon S800 drivers, not quite the same thing. It's cool having the CUPS option for PC printers, but there's got to be a way to use native OS X drivers for network printers if they're obviously available.
