Printer is gray in Printer Set up utility

Using OS 10.3.8, I downloaded the OSX drivers fodr the Richo Aficio 550 printer/copier. I ran the install, did everything it asked, and the printer is checked, but gray in the printer list. I did manage to find the PPD using Find, but the only place I saw it was in my OS9 folder. I copied it and thought it would paste it where the OSX PPDs go. Imagine my surprise when I noticed that there are hundreds of folders holding PPDs. I am disgusted with this inelegant, poorly designed OS in many ways, but I think this is the worst yet. I am not a UNIX geek, so I don't really know what to do here. Any ideas as as to where to drop my PPD and why it ended up in the OS9 folder? Thanks in advance for any help. By the way, a document will try to print for hours, but nothing happens.

You are making things just a bit too hard. Just leave the PPD anywhere. The Desktop is a convenient place. Within Printer Setup Utility from the Printer Model pop-up menu, choose Other... You will get a File/Open dialog box. Find your PPD. Printer Setup Utility will then setup your printer and place a copy of your PPD in a standard location. You may delete the original if you want.

Thanks for the help. I think I was thrown off because there was no mention of "PPD" (which is what anyone coming from OS9 is looking for) in the "Printer Model" list. There is no way to know that is where one chooses a PPD . Nor is there a "Printer Model" tab. You have to actually Add a printer to get that dialoge box. There is no apparent way to edit an existing printer.

The printer shows up and its box is checked, however the check box is dimmed. The document tries to print and then goes to "printing stopped." I can hit "start jobs", but then it goes throught the same cycle all over again. I can find nothing in the Help file regarding dimmed printers in the Printer List. This happens printing both as an IP printer and an AppleTalk printer. Thanks in advance for any help. By the way, I misspelled the printer's name before: it's a Ricoh Aficio 550.
