Printer sharing on G3 OS 9.2 from G4 OSX thru Airport Extreme

I thought Applecare consulting would answer this but they're so cheap, they won't discuss my G3 setup, just the setup on the G4 laptop for which I have Applecare. They said my goal was achievable, but would not say how. Hence:

The setup:

A G3 laptop, running OS 9.2

An HP laser printer connected through a round 8 pin to the G3 laptop.

Two recent G4 laptops running OSX 10.3

An airport extreme.

The goal:

To print wirelessly from the G4 laptops through the Airport Extreme using the G3 to access the printer (it's not an ethernet printer, so can't be attached directly to a hub or to the Airport Extreme).

I've tried attaching the G3 via ethernet cable to the Airport Extreme. We know the cable is working since the G3 is able to access the internet.

The G3 sees the printer in the Chooser under Laserwriter 8.

I've turned on file sharing on the G3, but don't see anything called "printer sharing"

Appletalk is on.

When I go into the G4's Print and Fax setup, I can't see the G3 or the printer attached to it.

What's missing?

Many thanks for any suggestions.
