I can tell you from experience, I connect my Brother printer to my airport base-station, and it was a challenge, having to restart the base-station several times, and select the printer in system preference.
Here is what worked for me, because my printer was initially connected to my computer directly:
I deleted the printer from my system preferences, as if I had no printer. Turned off my base-station, hooked the printer up, and restarted my base-station. Went into the Airport Admin to configure the base-station that a printer was hooked into it. Then I went into System Preferences, and configured that, indicating my printer was connected through the base-station, not the USB port on the computer itself.
