Printing from PBG3 Series using 10.2.8 to HP Printers

I use a PowerBook G3 Series running OS 10.2.8, with 256 MB RAM. I print to either a HP Deskjet 882c or 952c, USB connection, with an extension cable as well as the stock cable.

More often than not, when I attempt to print either a Safari or IE browser window, or a Word/Excel document, the print job spools, Print Center opens, I get the "processing job" message, but after the printer begins to actually print, the whole process hangs. I then see a "print jobs stopped" dialog, and the printer does nothing, other than blink its power button light. In order to clear the system, I have to cancel the job, and then either wait about 15 minutes (after which the printer suddenly spits out the unprinted page and resets itself) or turn the printer off and on manually.

I have tried Print Center Repair with no effect. I have redownloaded the drivers for the printer multiple times, with no effect. It can't be a RAM problem...I have 256 MB, and it hangs when all I have open is Safari and Print Center. I thought about allocating more memory to the printer, but can't figure out how to do it in OSX - I knew how to do it in OS 9. I have run Norton Utilities (no problems), and I have tried unplugging everything, cycling the power, and plugging it all back in. Nothing has solved the problem. The problem occurs with both of the HP printers - only one is connected at a time. I have tried hooking up the printer directly to the computer, without the extender cable, and it still hangs.

At this point, I'm trying to determine if the problem is (1) the printer/HP, (2) OS 10.2.8, (3) memory, or (4) the cables. I don't want to go out and buy another printer if that won't solve the problem.

Help!
