printing in classic

Hi,
I'd like to know how to set up my printer to print from classic.

I have an imac G5
originally OS X10.3.5
now OS X 10.4.5
756 Ram 160 G HDD
Epson RX510 via USB
DLink ADSL modem via ethernet

I've got classic installed because I have a number of pre OS X Apps that I don't want to upgrade yet. Among these is MS Office 98 that I (and the kids) use on the G5 and my old powermac 8500/250 OS 8.6.

The problem is that I can't set up the printer to print from Word.
Athough the printer's listed in the chooser, there's nothing in the "select a printer port:" window; so in effect no printer is selected.

Yes I know that! and after I do it I get nothing in the "select a printer port:" window?? so in effect Classic OS doesn't really know that there's a printer plugged into one of the USB ports.

Sounds as if you don't have the correct OS9 printer driver installed - or it's corrupted. (I'm assuming - although you haven't mentioned it - that it prints OK from OSX, indicating that the USB port is fine).

Don't waste your time. Word 98 is particularly averse to
printing in Classic.

Classic per se often does not play well with external devices.

The only solution I've found is to "choose" the LaserWriter 8
driver (No, you don't need a laserwriter, just one feature of
the driver) and select "print to file." That creates a .ps (post-
script) file. Open it in Preview and print from there.

Although Word 98 might well have problems, it should not have any influence on whether the printer is selectable in "Chooser".

For the record, I have no problems printing in classic, using a G4 tower running 10.3.9 and a G4 tower running 10.4.5.
