Hi,

I want to print from 2 macs (10.3.9 AND 10.4.6) to an XP-shared HP psc 2175
I've seen plenty of articles on printing to an XP-shared HP printer... for example:

http://www.macosx.com/content/faq.php/q8841/Printing-From-Mac-Osx-104-to-Windows-Xp-Shared-Hp-Multi-Function-Usb-Printer.html

I also saw this: You have to also install ESP ghostscript, which is on the same download page as hpijs: http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/

As far as I can tell... I *have* to use hpijs and ghostscript...
but... does this apply for both macs ??? 10.3.9 and 10.4.6
(is Apple or HP ever going to make it so that we don't have to use these cool but kinda creepy (to newbies) little 3rd party drivers ??)

From some of the posts I found, it mentioned installing some UNIX mumbo jumbo on the PC.. could someone tell me more about that ???

thanks!

I don't think the non-postscript printer manufacturers (Brother already makes CUPS drivers) will be motivated to write CUPS drivers until Apple gets rid of the legacy Carbon printing commands (in the application programming interface). Manufacturers find it easier now to just modify for the next newer model. In addition, they realize creating CUPS drivers makes even the cheapest printers available on the network. On Windows, the manufacturers didn't write "new standard" drivers until Micro$oft started popping up messages about how the driver isn't certified, when you installed the old drivers.

From the links you have, it looks like you are ready to share the printer!

Thanks! it seems to be working great.

I just had an additional problem.... the PC that is connected to the printer must often be connected to my job's VPN. When that happens, I can't print to the printer from the macs.

Is there some way that I could configure things so that the shared printer would be accessible even when the PC is connected to my company's VPN ?
