Problem booting to OS9 after clean install on G3

Hello, I have a powermac G3 blue and white. It came with an scsi card and scsi hard drive which had the os installed, but the hard drive failed and is no longer operable I removed that harddrive and I also removed the SCSI card. then i purchased a new 80 gig ultra ATA hard drive and connected it into the open ATA spot. I set the jumpers on the new drive to Master. the cd rom drive and the current hard drive are on two seperate ATA slots (not on the same ribbon) I used a retail version of os 9.2.1 to successfully initialize and install it onto the 80 gig hard drive. However, when i reboot it begins to boot into os9 but right before it loads the extensions i see an error that says "Sorry a system error occured, illegal instruction. To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and hold down the shift key" So i do that, and when the os9 splash screen comes up underneath it says "Extensions Off" But the same exact error pops up again. I zeroed out the hard drive and reinstalled os9 again and when i restart the same error pops up. I changed the ram out, made sure to hit CUDA switch. Any idea what i can do to fix this? Thanks a lot for your time.
