Problem installing new version of Java

My computer is a MAC OS X version 10.4.11.
I'm trying to begin indexing for family history work, but whenever I try to install the program, a message comes up saying I need a newer version of Java. I check for system updates and my computer says there are no updates available. Is there some way I can still download this indexing program?

Thank you,
LTP

Three things:
  1. Which program?
  2. Locate Java Preferences in /Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/. Set Java 5.0 as your default Java VM.
  3. If the Java program still does not work, then this is no different that a native application that requires a newer version of the OS. Time marches on. You cannot expect developers to ensure compatibility with older software forever.

Thanks for your help. I actually just found a different version of the indexing program on labs.familysearch.org which is more compatible for mac os computers and works just fine. Thanks for the help, though!
