Okay, please don't ask why, but I have been using an old Win98 machine with file sharing turned on as a file server at home for several years with no problems.
Now that I've got my new G4 tower at home, I've been loading and saving pictures on the Win98 machine and have come to find out the saving is not completely reliable. I can figure out what circumstances cause the corrupted saved file but here is what I know:
- I first noticed saving a JPG as a different name in the same directory as the original. The save appeared fine, but when I opened both files to compare them, the newly saved version was corrupt.
- Copying the exact same file from my Mac to the root worked fine.
- Copying the same file to another directory worked fine.
- Renaming the file completely and copying it to the "problem" directory failed.
- Copying other files to the problem directory worked fine.
- When the copy works fine, the copy progress bar is fast and goes away as soon as the end of the bar is reached. I noticed when the conditions are such that the copy fails, the progress bar goes pretty fast, but seems to pause either at or near the end of the bar for about a second or two, then it goes away without complaining.
- I've tried other files in other directories with mixed success so it is not specific to any file or directory.
- I checked the disk on the Win98 and it passed without any error.
So, I'm I trying to do something which just isn't completely supported? Is this a known problem? Is there a fix? I'm thinking I should maybe just upgrade the Intel machine to Win2000 since I haven't had any problems like this at work.
Thanks for the advice...
