Problem with external harddisk

Hello there,

I've bought an ICYBOX UB350 harddisk with usb2.0 & firewire. With that I bought an Hitachi Deskstar 500gb IDE disk to be put in the ICYBOX. If I connect it, it does some strange things. First of all I get the following message:

Disk insertion

The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

Intialize, Ignore, Eject.

I try initialize. Next thing happens is that Disk Utility is launched. I get the possibility to "Erase" the data on the disk, which results in a new partition of 500gb. After that, the disk automatically "mounts" and I could my stuff on it. After a while, I receive a new error:

The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "blabla.bla" could not be read or written.
(Error code -36).

My mac starts to slow down (I've got an eMac 1ghz with 1gb ram) for a minute, then responds normally for the rest. I can't eject the disk, so I turn it off. I restart my computer and retry. Again I receive the first error that the disk could isn't readable by this computer. New symptons: I can't erase the data again. And later when I retry I can erase it all of a sudden. So I retry, same story, and the disk works for around half an hour. Then I receive the same errors again. What is the problem here? Jumper settings? I tried both Master and Cable Select and both result in the same problems. Officially I need to set the jumpers on master, according to the Bracket. Why is my mac slowing down like hell, why do I receive those errors, and why does it work for a very, very little while?

And above all? What should I do?

Personally I think the problem lies within the fire wire bracket. Officially the bracket also supports mac computers, and I downloaded the latest driver from their site (which I'm not so sure about btw, because the name of the file contains UB250 instead of UB350) on the mac zip file).

Any help?
