Problems connecting to AFP Server

I have a 10.3.9 client trying to connect to a 10.4 XSERVE. It's a fresh reinstall of 10.3 with all the updates done.

We use Active Directory for login for our normal users, and the XSERVE is bound to the Active Directory. This all works fine for all the other Macs and Windows systems on the network. So I'm pretty sure that it's not a problem with how the XSERVE or Active Directory in general is set up.

Anyway.. When I log in to this Mac with a local account, and use Finder to Connect to Server I get prompted for a User ID and Password just like I would expect.

When I log in as an Active Directory account and use Finder to Connect to the same server I do NOT get prompted for a User ID and Password. I DO get connected to the server, but only can see the Guest allowed shares.

I'm not sure whether I am connecting to the server as Guest, or using the AD login ID (which doesn't have access to anything on the server, so I would get the same share list either way).

I need to be able to connect to the XSERVE with a different user id.

What am I doing wrong?

I have found that if I use the Kerberos GUI to destroy the ticket of the AD user when they are logged in, then I get prompted for a Kerberos ID when I try to connect to the AFP server. If I cancel that, then I get the normal ID/Password and thing work 'fine'.

But this is not really something I can teach a casual user how to do... ~:-(
