Problems downloading with Safari

freaky

OSXer
For some reason starting a few days ago Safari will not let me click on any links to download any file types. If I click on a link, say a .dmg.gz file, it goes to something like file:///private/tmp/501/.... for about a quarter of a second then goes back to the page and doesn't download the file. I'm using the latest version of Safari, have tried the Reset Safari option, have tried changing my download directory to desktop/home etc., cleared cache, and it will not download any files. I know for a fact that they do not download anywhere on my computer. The only way I can get it to work is to click Option then click.

Does anybody know how to fix this???

Under the Safari Menu, uncheck Block Popup and Filtered Content and see if that helps.

What is your setting in Safari > Preferences > General > Save downloaded files to: ??

By default that should be desktop [but any other place @ your home folder with do, e.g. Documents]

I tried both of your suggestions but unfortunately it's still not letting me download anything with a single click.

bobw,

Where can I find Filtered Content? I looked all over in the settings and didn't see it anywhere.

It's set to Desktop. I also tried my home folder but it didn't make a difference.

Filtered Content is part of Pithhelmet. If you don't see that, you don't have it installed. It's an add on to block Ads.

Post the URL where you get this;

file:///private/tmp/501/

Have you installed any download managers?
Any third party software/hacks for Safari?

In terminal type this (it resets your Safari preferences):
rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

Also run Disk Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities) to reset permissions.

Actually, I had SpeedDownload installed about a month ago then removed it, but this problem just started occuring a week ago.

I tried running the terminal command as well as Disk Utility repair permissions, but the problem is still occuring.

Any other ideas?

I just reinstalled that crappy Speed Download plugin then ran the "Uninstall" script and deleted it and now things are back to normal! I guess I thought it was safe to just delete the folder in the Apps directory instead of having to run an "uninstall" script.
