Problems Emptying the Trash...

Used Time Machine to do a standard back-up, for some reason it ran very very very slowly, so I aborted it, moved some of the older back-ups into the trash - but when attempting to then empty it, i've gotten a "error -8003" message constantly...

I tried option-emptying the trash as well as "Secure Empty Trash" from the Finder - nothing works, I keep getting this -8003 error - and I can't find anything on it online.

any ideas????

no solution yet.....this is what the error message looks like...

I tried every fix I could find but nothing worked. The only thing that did work was to reformat MacOSX from the install disc. It kept all of my original apps and settings. Then, I was able to empty the trash bin. Kind of a drastic solution but it worked. Guess I won't try to delete any more Time Machine back ups anymore; it's not worth the hassle.

doing a clean re-install did cross my mind but I really didn't wanna have to go there...

could it really be the case that you and I are the only ones to have ever gotten this -8003 error? and that there's no "real" solution out there for it?

very strange...

well, I'll give reinstalling a shot - and thanks for your suggestion :-)

Here are some things you can try. But I have the same issue with a bench machine in the shop and even using the sudo terminal commands don't empty the trash unless you can restore the file from the trash to someplace else and delete from there, that usually will work. But its not that big of a deal for me, so I don't worry about it too much. I'll get too it when I have spare time or it gets really annoying.

I don't know exactly how you deleted your excess TM backups, but it sounds like you corrupted the TM database.

There is a correct way to delete from TM...

A quote from Apple's TM 101...
" You can also enter the Time Machine restore interface and find files that can be removed from the backup disk itself to conserve space. To do this, select the file(s) and from the Action pop-up menu (gear icon) in the Time Machine Finder window choose "Delete All Backups of...". Be sure to only delete files you are sure you won't need or want to restore later"

well I already went ahead and did the OS reinstall as suggested in a previous posting and the problem now seems to be solved.
In the future I may attempt the fixes/methods you're suggesting - though I sure hope I don't find myself in that predicament again.

I have learned that its (apparently) a very bad idea to manually delete any Time Machine back-ups or otherwise temper with its doings, so that's something to keep in mind from now on.

thanks for your help!
