Problems using Disk Utility to copy DVD-R

Hi there. I am trying to copy a DVD-R that I created with my standalone Sony DVD recorder using the Disk Utility program. I am following the instructions I found here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724

Unfortunately, every time I attempt this, I get an 'Invalid Argument' error message while it is trying to create the duplicate image. Can anyone tell me how I can get this to work? Thanks in advance-

Adam

You may want to start with a disk and permissions repair (in Utilities folder)
"Invalid argument. This is used to indicate various kinds of problems with passing the wrong argument to a library function."

Makes a lot of sense..;(

yeah, unfortunately i've already tried this with no success. thanks, though.

Any chance that Sony has put some Digital Rights limitations on the DVD? Otherwise you could record content and make copies to sell. So you would have to go through the standard hack and find some share ware software to open the Sony DVD, make a new copy of the contents w/o the restrictions and then burn. There were some earlier posts on this board about the software available to crack these DVD's.

well, i do know that if i try to use the program 'fastdvdcopy' (which doesn't work, either) it does, indeed detect 'arccos protection', or something like that. i wonder if that is what the problem is...

i have a program that will let me rip the dvd's to mp4s... is it possible to burn a dvd after loading an mp4 into idvd or some program like it?

A perhaps too-simple query, Adam: Did you finalize
that DVD-R before trying to copy it?

And no. If you made a DVD, it doesn't have ARCCOS protection.
That's only with recent-vintage commercial DVDs.

thanks for the replies. yes i did make sure to finalize the dvd-r before attempting to copy.

for what it's worth, i just tried this again with the same dvd using the 'fastdvdcopy' program, and it is, indeed telling me "ARccOS protection detected". is it not possible that the program i recorded to dvd (an episode of 'rides' from tlc) has copy protection embedded or is having it embedded by my sony?

A workaround i can think of would be to rip the DVD (visit www.ripdifferent.com for more info)
and then burn it to DVD again. Tho by saying what you're trying to copy, your question may now be viewed as piracy-related. Tread lightly.

how do i burn a ripped file to dvd? my ripped file is currently in mp4 format. can i do something like that with disk utility or idvd?

secondly, why would my sony dvd burner place copy protection on a tv show? it's not a ppv movie, or anything, which i understand to have embedded copy protection. i'm not copying to distribute or sell...

thanks again-

You can use ffmpegx
to convert to DVD file. Instuructions are lited on their site.

Toast will also do it very easily (pretty much click DVD, and drag the mp4 into the window and click Burn) Costs money tho, unfortunately.
