I recently had a problem with my DVD player software (version 3.2) similar to the one
here
To sum up, whenever DVD player opened, it gave me an "Unknown Serious Error", saying OK to which would terminate the program. Interestingly, the DVD would start its intro behind the error message, but you couldn't control it.
To "fix" it, I looked in the Console and found that it had been missing files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/HIServices.framework
To hack around it I made a backup and then copied over the same directory from the 10.1 CD bundled with my system. The reason I didn't copy from 10.2 (which I am running) is that those files were not on that CD.
NOW, I get a different problem. i can now open up DVD Player and play a movie, but whenever it tries to enter Full Screen mode, it gives me an error "System Error -4956", and doesn't go into full screen mode. This does not terminate the program. I can't find any details about this error message in the Console or the System Profiler.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to either how to fix this problem or at least how to trace the error message further? Reinstalling the OS isn't really an option because the only option available to me is the Erase install, since I have the 10.2 upgrade CD rather than the retail.
