Problems with new hard drive

I recently replaced my old drive in my G4 mac with a new one. I connected the new drive as a "slave" since connecting it as "master" wasn't working. I was able to install OSX on the new drive but now there are other issues. For example, a wierd icon appears in the middle of the screen everytime I boot up the computer. The icon looks like a small computer screen with a smiley face on a gray background. It goes away after a few moments and OSX launches. Everything seemed to be okay after until the screen saver came on. Once I exited the screen saver my computer was in freeze mode and I had to reboot. Another thing I noticed was once I plugged in a peripheral (i.e, printer, external drive, ect.) the computer will not boot up. I am not that computer savy but I know there is definitely something wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If this helps---I am running a G4 PowerMac and using an OSX 10.1 install disk. It's the only install disk I have available right now. The hard drive I installed was a Western Digital 7200RPM EIDE 160GB purchased at Best Buy.

well, i can't answer your problem of the freezing and not booting with periphials. but I can tell you that the strange smiley computer icon is part of the firmware on G4 Macs that are able to boot Mac OS 9. the smiley means that it has found a device to boot from and is going to continue and boot from it.
