Problems with "shutdown now" under X.2.3

I am at the terminal and I attempt to run the shutdown command under my admin user account. That doesn't work so I login as root, and give the command "shutdown now".

When I do this.. this is what happens:

***FINAL System shutdown message from root@Jizzix.local. ***
System going down IMMEDIATELY

Sep 18 11:32:06 Jizzix shutdown: shutdown by root:

System Shutdown time has arrived.

Ok, now what the hell does all that stuff after System Shutdown time has arrived mean? The computer doesn't shut down after all this stuff goes by and it's kind of pissng me off. No idea how to fix it..

I'll try that command.. but does anyone have ideas on why I'm having problems with shutdown, or what those errors mean?

I've heard that shutdown -h just dumps you back to single user mode on OS X. That makes sense based on what you're seeing.

What can I look at to determine why it's doing this? I'm not doing shutdown -h but shutdown now.

All those errors talk about something of which I have no clue.

Oh, hmm... Maybe the lack of -h is the problem. That's the flag for "halt." See if shutdown -h now makes any difference.
