there is a delay between when you hit a volume control button on the keyboard and when the system volume actually changes. anyone have any idea what's going on? this computer has done this since day one and i'm not sure why. this is my mom's brand new iMac 17" with Mac OS 10.2.5 (this occurred with 10.2.4 as well).

Yes, this is a known issue. OS X regularly shuts down the sound subsystem to save energy. The delay you encounter is the time it takes to bring it up again. See:

There is a freeware called KeepSoundAwake which provides a workaround for this issue:
