Question About AirPort/Modem/Router

My parents' MacBook connects to the Internet wirelessly via AirPort. They have a modem from their ISP phone company and a base station/router. The whole connection/setup works great. My question is: When no one is using the Internet, for instance, overnight while they're sleeping, should they leave their base station/modem on or turn it off? Everything is plugged into a surge protector, so it can be shut off and turned on by a flick of a switch.

Thanks for your input.

I leave my airport on continuously, for over the last year. In fact, I believe it to be better to leave it all connected so the modem and router don't have to be re-synced.

That's what I thought. Only problem is, the router gets awfully warm, so I guess they feel safer with it off overnight.

Will it hurt anything to turn it off every night and re-sync the modem and router?

my dad turns his off when it is not being used, and that means it can go on and off several times aday, and has never had any issues with syncing or anything. and his is a mixed envrioment, enet and wireless, win 98, xp, vista and os x.
