question about systemuiserver

i have a new g4 powerbook, running 10.4.6. recently i've noticed that the hard drive seems to be running constantly, even when i haven't opened any programs or the computer is otherwise idle (the fan also seems to be kicking in a lot more often). i opened disk utility and noticed that every 5-10 seconds the systemuiserver process would start up for a few seconds and then close again. is this normal? is there some way of stopping this? (this may sound strange, but i actually find the noise of the hard drive distracting while i'm working.) i'm new to macs, so sorry if this is a naive question. thanks!

The SystemUIServer should not be stopping, rather it should be running constantly and using very few resources and disk accesses. If it is constantly restarting then it is most likely that something is going wrong with its startup - check the console logs (Applications/Utilities/Console.app) to see if there is anything unusual there.

Possibly a third party app that messes with the UI server in some way (such as a virtual desktop application) might be the culprit. You may resolve the issue by reinstalling the OS.
