Question about upgrading OS

I'll start out by saying I know next to nothing about Mac's. I recently bought a iPad2 and attempted to sync it with with wife's iMac in order to upload music from the computer to the iPad. Evidently an iTunes upgrade was needed first, so I downloaded iTunes 10.5.

Once downloaded I attempted to install the package and received an error message saying MAC OS X 10.5 was required to install this version of iTunes. I have figured out she is currently operating under Mac OS X Version 10.4.11.
The Processor is 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and the Memory is 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

My question is: how can I upgrade her OS from 10.4.11 to the 10.5 so we can sync the iPad and iMac in the iTunes library?

Thanks in advance for any help. It may be something very simple, I don't claim to know anything about Mac's and how they work.

I recommend that you upgrade to at least MacOS X 10.6. Whether you upgrade to MacOS X 10.6 or hold back with MacOS X 10.5, you need to purchase a shrinkwrap retail distribution MacOS X DVD. Do not try to install the OS from a gray DVD. This is a System Restore disc for a specific model Mac. It will not install on your computer.
