Question for the web maestros.. / re: helping people by setting up a web site

Hi there,

I want to put my energy into setting up and maintaining a web site that provides people with a way of helping others... by 1. allowing people to post requests for help of any form 2. allowing people to post offers to help by offering their services of any kind... either for donation or barter and 3. provides my own spin on a categorized directory of ways that people can help others.. I have a very nice domain name registered for the concept -- helpfulsoul.com / helpfulsoul.org I think that's fitting, simple and powerful anyway.

I'd like for it to generate money to support itself with excess proceeds going to charities. I know a little about programming, but don't want to spend my energy there.. I was hoping to perhaps use a CMS or vBulletin or something like that in conjunction with Google ads to generate some advertising revenue. Can anyone give me some pointers about which CMS I should use or how I can best get setup to generate advertising revenue? Collaborators are more than welcome.

I also would need advice with regard to getting hosting that is reasonably priced enough to afford my startup, but at the same time, can scale well as the site grows.

Any suggestions would be wonderful.
 
ug... I hate the thought of doing a business plan.
I guess that would be a good start though.

The reason I was hoping I wouldn't need a business plan
is that I was hoping the site would catch on because of
a unique blend of content.. similarly to how some blogs catch on.
 
It won't catch on if there's nothing to catch on to! That's why a business plan is so important.
