Question mark in dock won't go away.

In an earlier version of OS X, perhaps as early as 10.4.9, I had installed the printer icon permanently on the dock.

For reasons I won't go into I had to delete and reinstall the printer app.

I am left with a question mark icon on the dock titled "HP Deskjet 5900 series" that does nothing and that I can't get rid of.

It won't drag off and go poof.

Clicking with shift, option, and command does nothing; control-click or right-click brings up the three-item Open at Login/Show in Finder/Open context menu, but none of those does anything.

It won't drag with shift, control, or option. It will drag with command, but there's a stop symbol attached. With command it can be dragged to the trash, and trash highlights and the stop symbol disappears as if this is going to work, but it doesn't. Nothing is added to trash and the question mark icon remains in the dock.

That's everything I've thought of to try.

Suggestions? (I'm not afraid to use Terminal.)

Secondary question: I liked having the printer icon permanently in the dock. I'm pretty sure I got the old printer icon there using a context menu that said something like "Keep in dock". That option is not present in 10.5.3 so I've had to put an alias on the desktop, which I dislike because I like a clean desktop. Is there a way to put a working printer icon in the dock?
