QuickTime on the go...

Well, we've got picture phones now, this may be the way in for actual video phones.

In the UK, picture messages are already old hat.

I feel lost if I'm not texting someone.

Video phones have been around through 3G, but they're not doing too well for various reasons, least of them being the video.

My friend got the Animatrix movie onto his smartphone, pretty nifty...

The only thing is, Three are rubbish. They don't have any decent handsets yet and their internet access isn't up (and no timeframe the last time I spoke to them). Hopefully by the time I'm due for an upgrade (August), Orange will have their 3G network up and the lovely Sony Ericsson 3G phone will be out. I tried the NEC one for two weeks and it sucked! But, back on topic, I noticed at the time that the video format was based on MP4 and about the same time QuickTime started supporting 3G video. Anything happening in Japan in terms of mobiles will probably happen here next so it would be good to see Apple in a strong position for it, especially with Mircrosoft threatening to get into the mobile business.

Microsoft have been dealt a blow by Apple's success with the mobile video format.

At the time of the ratification of the standard, Microsoft even explored legal options to block Apple and the standards authority!

Since then, they've submitted .wm9 as a proposed 'standard' for review, but I've heard nothing and this must have been June last year.

I've covered much of this before, but between the consumer electronics, music and movie industry all not wanting to adopt Microsoft's media, Microsoft have a difficult road ahead of them...
