RAM Upgrade

Ok got a 512mb stick for about £57. Can someone point me to a tutorial on installing emac ram or gve me a rough idea of where the expansion slot is. I've changed ram on a pc before but I want to be more cautious with my mac.

Yea, that looks mad. You'd have to have some kinda anorexic fingers to get stuff done in there. Another plus for the Emac! I can eat and still upgrade my ram. :)

I'd be afraid of breaking the Mac mini while trying to open it. This is one of Apple's latest design problems. The Mac Mini. It's great being so small, but I would think screws would be much eaiser. Instead of who knows how many plasic clips.

While I've already started this thread on ram I have a related question. I read in my emacs manual when upgrading my system that the max ram on it is 2 sticks of 512mb, they round it off to 1GB max. Which is more than what I need.

So, my question is why is there a limit on the max amount of ram you can add? Is it something technical or just to encourage you to upgrade the computer.

1GB = 1024 MB. Which is exactly what you get when you have 2x512 MB sticks. Unless I'm misunderstanding your question.

No, sorry my question was the bit underneath that. Why is there different Ram 'limits' on certain computers. Like my emacs 1GB an Imac is, whatever the ram limit on an imac is (i dont know). Anyway, is there a reason for this other than try to encourage you to upgrade your computer? I just wondered.

Two possibilities. It is either a BIOS (or equivalent on the Mac) limitation. On older PC motherboards, there is a limit to the size of memory that is supported. Though i'd be surprised if this was still the case.

More likely, if the larger sized RAM would work fine. They just had a spec of 1GB assuming that you could only fit 2x 512 MB sticks in there. The only way to be sure is to find out. Try borrowing some 1GB sticks and see.
