random lockups on G4 Cube with osx 10.2

I have recently started having machine lockups when I start the computer and leave it at the login screen in 10.2. The whole screen locks up and will not allow me to do anything. Also sometimes in using programs such as Word, Excel (ha, ha) and IE, and mail open at the same time. I get a random lockup that will not allow me to force quit or do anything else. I just have to turn off the system. I have verified permissions and verified disk. Are there any other programs I can use to check my disk or does this sound like a software issue?
