Hi,

I have a friend that has an old laptop (not sure which model) which died suddenly before she backed up her files, she's had to go out and get a new one because she needs if for school, i was just wondering if it was possible to take the hard drive out of the old laptop (we don't think it was the hdd that failed) and put it into an external case so that she can get her work and files off?

I've never worked with a Mac before, but have plenty of experience with PC hardware, so doing it wouldn't be a problem, just whether its going to work or not.

Any help greatfully received and appriciated.

If the mac shows any signs of life, you can try target disk mode, but I assume that it's dead for good. In this case, you can find the model and look for take-apart instructions (ifixit has some good ones), then take the HD out and stick it in a portable 2.5" HD enclosure. You will need a mac, or additional software to read the format. Mac-formated drives will not be viewable in XP or Vista.

Well her new laptop is another Mac so thats okay, the old one doesn't show any life any more, i'll suggest it as an option to her
