Real media stream recorded to iPod

I take classes on line with lectures delivered via Real.

Every five minutes or so Real player stops for about 30 seconds to rebuffer.

This is a large pain.

I have increased the cache and buffer size to the max, but still there are rebuffering time outs.

I use DSL wireless / 1.5 GHz / 1GB RAM G4 Laptop.

I'd like to run the lectures and record the audio, something like this...

Run the lecture in Real, it plays and the sound is recorded, either to my Mac laptop or directly to my iPod for later listening.

Then I’d like to edit out the time spent rebuffering.

Is there a good way to do this???

Many thanks.

Realplayer format is notorious for "buffering" annoyingly even on quite good connections.

To best way to grab audio from Real to a useable format is to use AudioHijack, available from http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/.

As for cutting out the silences, you could use QuickTime Pro but it would be pretty annoying. GarageBand might make the task a little easier without needing to spend any extra cash. There is also a good open-source audio editor called "Audacity" that you could try.

I'm not absolutely sure since I've never done it myself, but I think VLC can play most RealMedia audio streams. And it can not only play, but also save and transcode streams. So in theory you should be able to open that stream in VLC and have it save it as an mp3.

But again, I've never done it myself.

Hope this helps.
