Rebuilding your desktop?

With Mac OS 7.1 you could simply hold down Command + Option while the computer started up to rebuild your desktop but it doesn't work in Mac OS X. My friend said you have an option to in Disk Doctor but the menu item is always inactive so he can't rebuild/defrag his iMac. Help?

There is no rebuilding the desktop in OS X, I believe (unless there's a similar thing via the Terminal in UNIX).

UPDATE: OK, I take that back. There is something that is strikingly similar, but takes up much less time and effort. All you have to do is go to your home folder, open up the "Library" folder, open up the "Preferences" folder, and then delete all three of these files: "LSApplications", "LSSchemes", "LSClaimedTypes".
