Recording on a mac...non-pro tools. DJ style?

has a mac beyond repair
Hello.

I am on a brand new Mac OS X Jaguar 10.2.8 Powerbook G4 1ghz w/ a DVD burner
and 512mb of ram and a 40gb hard drive. I just bought Deck 3.5 LE but also
want to know some good recording programs for the mac.

I want to be able to record my DJ sets on my turntables via a line-in input.

I also want be able to do some demos with bands and do BT kind of stuff.

Some software reccomendations would be much appreciated. I cant afford Pro Tools though so anything else please. Thanks.

I can think of a few programs off the top of my head: Logic Audio, Cubase, or Digital Performer for arranging your composition; and Sound Studio or Cacaphony for recording audio directly.

DigiDesign are bringing out an OSX version of ProTools Free soon. Hopefully within the next month or two.

I use soundstudio. Is shareware so you can try-before-you-buy. Have been archiving old vinyl, works well for that. Can even take out scratces by zooming in, selecting (they are big, thin, obvious spikes)and doing "insert silence". Normalise works well for quiet recording, and has decent enough EQ and High/Low pass.

Also seems comfortable with long files. Have recorded my friends DJ sets up to about 1 hour on my pb G4 867 640mb ram. If you do record long files, you MUST save before you start editing, as it can crash if you give it too many commands too quickly. Gives files in AIFF which are easy to convert to MP3 or AAC in iTunes.

good luck

here's a few I use, tho my uses are far less demanding than what you're looking for, so this may not be all that helpful.
(also, these are for OS X 10.2.8 - some of these aren't working in 10.3 as of yet - at least that I've experienced)

Audacity - free sound app through sourceforge.net. pretty nice, not too incredible, but nice and free

check www.rogueamoeba.com - there's a few audio apps - LineIn may be one that suits you. Free and low cost apps here.

I'll mention as someone else did - Sound Studio. another good app.

if you can blow some money, Reason (TechTV did a whole thing on it, looks sweet, but it's like $300 or something like that) is incredible. Tho much more than I'd ever know what to do with.

hope this helps!

Reason isn't really for recording though, it's production software - sampler/synths etc. Stuff like SoundStudio's fine for recording something like decks, for multitracking then I'd stick with PT Free.

soundstudio sounds cool so far. can i get a website or a price?

Reason i do want to get soon. Its $370 at the Apple store around the block from me (that just opened...yay). I also want to do production and recording.

As for some of the free ones, ill be sure to check those out as well. Keep em comin! I appreciate it!
