Recovering from a corrupt iPod

Ok, so my ipod is corrupt, but I want to get all the data off before I restore it. I've done a lot of reading up on it, and it doesn't seem like there's any freeware/shareware that will let me do this. I've done a scan with the Stellar Phoenix demo (and can see all my files) but I'm not willing to fork out $130 at this point.

Freeware/shareware options to copy files from my iPod such as Senuti, or cabon copy cloner, super duper don't work because they can't see the Ipod when it's connected.

Any suggestions?
 
Most ipods have a reset/reboot function which resets the ipod but doesn't erase the contents. On my 3rd Generation iPod it's holding the play/pause and menu keys down together for about 5 seconds. Might be different for your ipod.

Why don't you have your music backed up to a hard drive other than the ipod?
 
It seems to reset every time I use it, asking me to select the language.... It doesn't show any playlists or music, but still has 37GB of stuff on it (only 1.9 GB capacity remaining). Reseting it doesn't change anything.

iTunes can see it, but says it needs to be initialized...
Having the iPod in disk mode doesn't change anything.
I can see it with disk utility, but verifying it gives me an error (can't remember which one... currently scanning it for my lost files with Testdisk)

Testdisk seems to be the only free/shareware thing I can find... but it's taking forever.

And I know it's really idiotic to not have a backup, but my HD is only 15GB so I got a big iPod for all my music. I've got most of it on backup CDs (lots of them) but I don't have it all, and I'm still hoping I can get my playlists.
