Reinstall iTunes because of sync failure

My iPod Classic seems to have crashed - I get an error message which says the disk cannot be repaired and as soon as I click OK another message pops up. So I cannot reset or in any way manage my iPod from iTunes. I have to Force Quit iTunes and disconnect the iPod.

By the way, I have the latest version of iTunes (8.2.) and I have tried restarting the devices involved. My questions to you are:

1) Should I reinstall iTunes, and if so, how do I do it?
2) I don't have a backup of my music library, except on my iPod which as I say has a disk failure (many songs seem to be missing). Is it safe to reinstall iTunes, or do I risk losing my library if I do so?
I have long thought about buying an external harddisk and engage Time Machine, but have never gotten round to it yet...

So there it is. If you can help me in any way, I will be most grateful.
