reinstalling iPhoto on Mac Book

having problems with iPhoto on my Mac Book. The photos disappear from my library. I can find them in my hardrive but can't seem to make them stay put in my photo library.

is anyone else having this problem? I've verified permissions...tried deleting thumbs but no go.

someone suggested reinstalling iphoto from the start up disk but unsure how to do this without reinstalling everything else.

can you talk me through it?

[Curiosity]

I have the reverse complaint. iPhoto wants to keep every version of every picture I have ever edited with it. I have to clean out the iPhoto Library periodically just to get rid of excess junk.
