Remove Spotlight icon

I dont like Spotlight. I have no use for it since I dont have around 45.000 pictures/movies/documents etc. So I've decided to "disable" it by putting my entire harddrive into the "..prevent from searching these locations" in Spotlight System Preferences. But one thing is still bugging me. How do I remove the blue Spotlight icon which is placed on the top right corner?

The only way that I can think of (though I'm not sure if it would work) is to edit the .nib file that contains the menu (you'll need Interface Builder to do that).

I can't yet find a way yet. What happens if you uncheck each item in spotlight preferences? I did not yet try this approach.
