When I try to repair the permissions on Panther 10.3.3, I obtain this error:

Repairing permissions for “system”
Error: No valid packages (-9997)

Permissions repair complete

You can also look at the attached screenshot.

Do you know what it means?
Thanks.

I've previously cleaned my Receipts folder.
Anyway, seems that "Repair Permissions" utility repairs only permissions of the packages found in the Receipts folder.
I didn't know it.
Don't feel bad that you didn't know that. MacHome recently had an article titled "Spring Cleaning" that recommended deleting the packages in the /Library/Receipts folder to save disk space. Needless to say they have been forced to retract this recommendation because the packages are used not only as the standard source of information for repairing data but also by Software Update to determine what versions of which apps you have installed on your system.

They have since posted downloads of various package sets you can use to fix the problem. These downloads only contain basic Apple software and do not have third party packages, but at least these are better than having to reinstall everything from scratch to restore the functionality.
