Repeated Login Screen - Help!

suddenly one day....

I come to the login screen, type in my name - OS X (most recent) accepts it (no shaking), screen goes briefly blank, then comes right back to the login screen.....

Its the same name and password I've been using for a year....

Help!

seems to be crashing, not a hard crash though, so it boots you out. Try running a permissions check from the install CD. Also run a check on the X partition and see what that returns. If that doesn't work you may need a 3rd party app like DiskWarrior or worse case a install in place.

Before doing the following did you try to log in using Safe Mode or boot into Single User Mode in order to fsck?

Anyways, while in Single User Mode delete all caches and preferences from the home and root folders like:
/Library/Caches/
~/Library/Caches/
/Library/Preferences/
~/Library/Preferences/
