Replacing Failed Mirrored Raid Drive

I am running a file server with OSX Tiger Server. It has a mirrored drive raid. One of the drives has failed and the server now barely runs. Sometimes it starts in safe mode and others it won't start-up at all. I do have a cloned back-up however I want to try to replace the raid drive as my first option. I have done some searching and most of the comments are on a replace and reformat method which I find completely purpose defeating. What is the point of running a mirror if it can't be repaired. I may as well just run a straight drive with a nightly cloned back-up. My ideal scenario would be to start up using the good drive and clone that for a more recent back-up than last nights. However now I hear that I can't even remove the drive and start up off it in isolation. Can someone please explain to me A. the point of mirrored raid and B. How to fix it?
