Replacing slot-loading iMac's HD?

Hi,

due to frequent powercuts in my university dorm, my iMac's HD is taking longer and longer to spin up... it usualy starts to spin up, emit a few beeps, spin down and start again a few time when booting the computer or waking it from deep sleep.
BTW, I defragmented it recently without problems, so I'm pretty sure it's a physical problem.
Since I'm rather warry of the HD in question now, I've decided to change it before it breaks down. Does anyone know how hard it is to change a slot-loading iMac's HD? Can I do it myself or do I need to get a technician to do it? And for the replacement HD, what sort should I get? Are they standard HD?

TIA,

Kinniken

Make sure you ground yourself before touching anything inside the machine. You need to disperse the static electricity in your body or you will zap you machine.

Sure, you bet I will be careful ;) I'll probably borrow one of those anti-static bracelet from a friend.
In any case, I'm probably going to wait until the HD dies. Just want to make sure I have everything ready to replace it when it does.

Back up those important files while you can. Once the drive dies, you will not be able to replace them.

And I back everything on it every night :) Gotta love those FW HD!
On a related note, when I replace my HD, what speed should I get? I'll like to get the fastest drive my computer can work with, but there is no point in buying one too fast for the motherboard. Anyone?

To protect yourself from future powercuts you might invest in a power back up system like APS. Get the kind that can let you stay up on battery power for a limited time. You get more battery time with more $$$ spent.

Cheers!
